Seeing the Build

Entreprenuerial programmers can see the end product in their heads before they get started writing the spec.   That vision of the end prodcut is the reason for starting to develop in the first place.  But seeing the end product is a long way from what it takes to make a good programmer.  Really all that means is that they are good dreamers, and has nothing at all to do with writing code. Good programmers follow specs (you do have a spec, don’t you?) and cover all the edge cases as they write code, test  and fix (write code test, and fix,  write code, test and…) But it’s the entreprenuerial programmers that muscle through that, from the very beginning, and do something mediocre programmers will never do: See the Build When a programmer begins to visualize how each module of … Continue reading

The Thing About Teaching

…is that you’re aiming at a moving target. And it’s hard to say who you’re serving in the first place.  Is it the students?  Their parents? The board? The principal? Glue Toolbar, A First for Usefulness in Social Networking

I’ve been waiting for social networking to be useful to me.  Up to now it’s simply been a ‘neat thing’ but not so very useful.  Not even LinkedIn really does it for me. Well, that may change.  I just heard about this tool that let’s you know what your friends (I use the term loosely) think about what ever it is you’re looking at. Couple of quick features and then I’ll leave you to try it for  yourself: To participate you can either “like” something or add your “two cents” — a short, 140 character, Twitter-like comment. You can also tell Glue to automatically Twitter whatever you put in your two cents. Now, whenever you visit a page that contains something Glue is aware of — a book, album, restaurant, etc. — the Glue Bar will drop down and give … Continue reading

Consider Me Insured

For those of you keeping up:  I am insured as of today. I can’t tell you what a huge relief this is, but if you can do simple math, imaging no longer having a $15,000 bill every four months.
