Geekwise – Now With Mobile Support
by irms
I’m happy to report that this blog now supports viewing on your mobile device. There are probably some bugs, so please let me know if you stumble across something weird.
And a big shout out to Tyler Reed for the MobilePress plugin. Out of the box, it worked on 90% of the phones I tested.
I’m asking for support for those last 10%. Let’s watch what happens…
[ --- Update --- ]
I recieved an email from Mr. Reed himself regarding the cry for help I left on this blog. This is what he said:
Hey Irma,
Thanks for commenting on my blog and making use of MobilePress. The issue you are experiencing is caused by a WordPress tag that we use in the mobile themes, which is also used in standard WordPress themes. This tag allows other plugins to load their functionality into your themes, such Ad Sense, ShareThis, etc.
In our next release, we will have an option for you to turn this tag off. We’re working as fast as possible to get our next release out with many new features and fixes. If you are using WordPress 2.7, you will be able to update MobilePress easily, using their auto-upgrade functionality.
If you have any other questions or issues, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Kind Regards
-Tyler
Now that’s impressive! Will I tell every blogger I know? Undoubtedly.
Hi Irms,
I see your site works correctly on an iPhone. I also use the Mobile Press plugin but the regular version of my site, not the mobile edition, pulls up when I look at it on an iPhone. I also notice that other plugin users have the same problem. Did you have to tweak something to make it work on an iPhone?
My mobile edition looks great on all other types of cell phones. I have all my plugin options set to ‘No’. (When I select Yes to ‘Force Mobile Site’ my site shows up correctly on an iPhone. Unfortunately, that also forces the mobile version when looking at the site on a desktop/laptop.)
I posted a question on the plugin site a few months ago but no one answered. I figure since you are the only one who seems to have it working correctly on an iPhone I figured I’d give a shot by asking you.
Thank you for any help.

Hi Tim,
Thanks for stopping by.
To answer your question, MobilePress has a menu of it’s own in the WordPress Admin area. if you scroll down and look on the left side, you’ll see a MobilePress section and an “Options” link.
There should be a dropdown menu there that asks, “Treat iPhone as a web browser?”, and you’ll want to choose “No.” If you say yes, it’s going to use the full featured theme as it would in a regular browser.
Hope this helps,
irms
Hi Irms,
Thanks for the reply. Yep, I do have all the MobilePress options set to “no” including the “Treat iPhone as a web browser”.
I have also tried using both the ‘default’ and ‘iPhone’ theme options after selecting ‘iPhone Browser’ in the Mobile Themes panel. So far, no luck.
So, I take it you didn’t do anything special to get it working?
Hi Tim,
Sorry, the only other thing I did to get it to work correctly (besides setting all the options to “No”) was during installation.
I use WP Super Cache and I needed to clear the cache, disable the plugin, install MobilePress, and then renable Super Cache. I was getting odd results on both my laptop and on different phones until I did that. Since then, I haven’t done anything!
Perhaps you have another plugin that is conflicting?

Hi irms,
Turns out my web site works just fine on an iPhone. Oddly, my site, and those of most others who use MobilePress, does not work on an iPhone simulator at iPhonetester.com. However, yours does.
Thanks for you help.
